Verse to Remember:  Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. – Psalm 100:4 (NIrV)

Big Idea: I need to take time to thank God.

Have you ever forgotten to do something important? Was it something for school or a chore around the house? Maybe you owed someone money and forgot to pay them back.

It’s easy to forget things that matter when we’re busy or distracted. That’s what happened to a group of men who met Jesus.

These guys were in bad shape. They had a terrible skin disease called leprosy. In those days, people with leprosy had to stay away from everyone else. That meant that not only were these guys sick, but they had to leave home. They could never see their family or friends. Can you imagine how hard that would be?

But one day they met Jesus and cried to him, “Jesus! Master! Have pity on us” (Luke 17:13 NIrV).

Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests, the religious leaders of the day. This may not have made much sense, but they did it anyway because they’d heard Jesus could do amazing things.

Then, on their way to see the priests, something incredible happened. Their diseased skin began to transform before their very eyes. Their painful sores closed up. The gross places faded into smooth, healthy flesh. They were healed!

It was a miracle, an amazing thing only God could do. Now, they could go home and see their family and friends and return to their normal lives. Can you imagine how excited they must have been? They couldn’t wait to run and tell everyone what had happened.

They were so excited, in fact, that they forgot to do something important. They forgot to go back to Jesus and say, “Thank you.”

All of them except for one.

“When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back. He praised God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him” (Luke 17:15-16).

Jesus asked him what happened to his friends. Weren’t they healed too? Yet only one of them took the time to thank Jesus.

Think About It:
What do you do when something good happens to you? Do you run off and enjoy it? Do you tell all your friends about it? Or do you stop and tell Jesus thank you?

It’s not enough just to say we’re thankful people. We need to actually take the time to tell God thanks.

Thankful prayers remind us that God is the giver of all good things and keep us from becoming selfish. They help us to remember that God himself is way more important than any blessing He could give us.

God, you are the giver of all good things. Knowing you is better than any gift you could give us. Please help us to be like the one man who came back to say thanks. We love you. Amen.

Talk About It:
1. Why do you think we sometimes forget to thank God?
2. What’s something good in your life you can thank God for right now? Go for it!
3. Are there any people in your life who deserve your thanks this week?  Make a thank you card and give it to them before you forget.

Read More About It:
You can read about Jesus and ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19.
