Big Idea: Jesus came to save us from sin.

Verse: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. – John 8:36 (NIV)

Have you ever been stuck? Maybe you were climbing a tree but couldn’t get down. Or maybe you reached through the banisters on the stairs but couldn’t get your arm out. Or maybe you got your hair caught in something or accidentally glued your fingers together.

There are all kinds of ways to get stuck.

Sometimes when we’re stuck, we can get ourselves out of the mess, but other times we may be stuck so bad we can’t save ourselves. That’s when we need someone who’s not stuck to set us free.

That’s what Christmas is all about. God’s people weren’t stuck in a tree or in the banisters on the stairs. They were stuck in sin. Sin is when we do bad things. It’s when we do things our way instead of God’s way.

God can’t stand sin, but thankfully he loves us. That’s why he sent Jesus. Jesus came to earth to free us from our sin, and a group of shepherds were the first ones to hear about this good news.

On the night Jesus was born, the shepherds were taking care of their sheep in the fields near Bethlehem. Suddenly, the darkness exploded with brilliant light. An angel appeared to them and said, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news. It will bring great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11 NIrV).

This wasn’t just good news. It was the best news ever. Jesus didn’t just come to be a teacher or a helper and or to do amazing things. He came to be our Savior. He came to set us free from sin.

Think About It
When we ask Jesus to be our Savior, he forgives the wrong things we’ve done so we can be friends with God. But also, each day we can ask his help to free us from bad habits that may be tough to change on our own. Whether it’s fighting with your sister or telling a lie, Jesus can free you from that sin and help you to live for him.

Prayer
God, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for setting me free from sin. Please help me to change the things I could never change on my own. Amen.

Talk About It
1. Can you think of a time you were stuck? What did you do?  Did someone help you? How did it feel when you were set free?
2. How do you think the shepherds felt when the angels told them about Jesus?
3. Have you ever felt stuck doing the same wrong thing over and over again?  What is it? Talk to Jesus about it and ask him to help.

For Grown-Ups
God made us to be free. Is there anything in your life right now that’s keeping you from experiencing freedom? Whether it’s a persistent sin or negative thoughts you can’t seem to shake, God can help you. Jesus is our Savior, and he came to set us free because he loves us. Meditate on the words of John 8:36 and talk to a trusted friend about how you can take a step towards freedom today.
