Verse: Great is our Lord. His power is mighty. There is no limit to his understanding. – Psalm 147:5 (NIrV)
Big Idea: God knows everything, and he always understand me.
Who’s the smartest person you know? Your best friend? One of your parents? Your teacher? Or maybe it’s you. Some people seem to know everything. They can name all the U.S. Presidents and the capital of every country in the world and even tell you who won the very first World Series in 1903.
Other people know a lot about science or medicine or cooking or how to build incredible sculptures out of LEGO bricks.
God has filled the world with smart people, but even the smartest people on earth don’t know everything. The only one who knows everything is God.
Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord. His power is mighty. There is no limit to his understanding” (NIrV). No limit!
God created the universe so he knows everything about how it works. He’s a scientific genius. He designed your body and mind so he’s the ultimate medical expert. God’s seen everything that’s ever happened so he knows every detail of the history of the world.
The coolest thing, however, is that God is an expert on us. He knows us inside and out. He knows what we’re going to think before we think it. He knows what we’re going to say before we say it.
Here’s what a friend of God, named David, once wrote in Psalm 139:1-4, 6 (NIrV):
Lord, you have seen what is in my heart.
You know all about me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up.
You know what I’m thinking even though you are far away.
You know when I go out to work and when I come back home.
You know exactly how I live.
Lord, even before I speak a word,
you know all about it . . .
I’m amazed at how well you know me.
It’s more than I can understand.
Think About It
The God who knows everything, knows you. That is a wonderful thing. When you think no one understands how you’re feeling, remember God understands. When you think no one knows how hard your life can be, remember God knows. When you’re facing a tricky situation or feel confused, remember God’s not confused at all.
He knows exactly what you should do. Just ask him. He probably won’t answer out loud but he may remind you of a Bible verse that shows what to do or he may speak through a wise friend who can help you to go God’s way. Whatever the case, never forget, God knows everything so it’s okay when we don’t. He will be there to help us figure things out every step of the way.
Pray About It
God, you are so smart. You know everything about everything, even about me. I’m glad you understand me God, and I’m glad I know you. Amen.
Talk About It
- What is something you know a lot about? What does God know a lot about?
- If you could ask God one question about space or animals or history or some other interesting subject, what would it be?
- Have you ever felt like no one understands you? How does it make you feel that God understands?
Do you ever wish you were a little bit smarter or wiser? Life is full perplexing situations that sometimes leave us wondering what to do. The great news is you don’t have to have all the answers in life. You just need to remember who does. God knows you and your circumstances inside and out, and he has plenty of wisdom to share with you for any situation.
